THE VALUE OF AN EDUCATION (Part 1)

John returned to school to get a high school equivalency diploma. when asked why, he said, " i realized that i needed an education". But  just what is an  "education"? The ability to recite an impressive array of facts? This no more makes an education than a pile of bricks makes a house.

Education should prepare you for a successful life. The education that teaches you how to think, to solve problems, what is rational and irrational, the fudamental capacity to think, clearly, to know what data is and to know the connections between parts and whole. To make those judgements and distinctions, to learn how to learn".

And how does school fit it?  School, however, can help you nurture and cultivate thinking ability. This is the ability not merely to recite facts but also to analyze them and generate productive ideas from them.
